Notice of Intent to Appoint Council Member

November 28, 2023 

Due to the 2023 City Election, the City Council of the City of Van Meter will have a vacancy as a result of Joe Herman running for mayoral election & being elected Mayor effective January 1, 2024. The City Council intends to fill the vacancy by appointment at the regular City Council meeting beginning at 7:00 P.M., on December 11, 2023 at the Van Meter United Methodist Church, 100 Hazel Street, Van Meter, IA 50261. This meeting will be a public meeting.

 

All qualified persons interested in being appointed council member for the Van Meter City Council are encouraged to apply via the board and committees’ appointment form on the City of Van Meter website. Candidates are not required to be present at the Council meeting when the Council votes on filling the vacancy. 

 

Provided, however, that if within 14 days after publication of this notice or within 14 days after the appointment is made, a petition is filed with the City of Van Meter pursuant to Iowa Code Section 372.13 requesting a special election to fill the vacancy, the appointment by the Council shall be temporary, and the Council shall call a special election to fill the vacancy.
