The City of Van Meter is a chartered city with a Mayor-Council/Administrator form of government. The Mayor and five City Council members are elected at-large and each serves alternating four-year terms.

The professional staff is headed by the City Administrator and a talented team of both full and part-time employees, which includes the City Clerk, Public Works Director, Assistant Public Works Director, Library Director, Parks and Recreation Coordinator, Public Safety Director, and dedicated volunteers.

Parks and Recreation CoordinatorThe City of Van Meter is seeking applicants for the position of Parks and Rec Coordinator. Qualified applicants should possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Sports Management, Marketing, Public or Business Administration, or a closely related field.

The successful candidate must be a self-starter, collegial, and able to demonstrate strong leadership skills. The position will require both strong organizational and administrative abilities as well as a willingness to be very hands on with the maintenance, upkeep, improvement, and manicuring of the City’s recreation facilities.

Public Works OperatorUnder the direction of the Director of Public Works this position is responsible for the maintenance of the public streets, water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, storm water sewer system, and green-space grounds keeping.

The work is varied, requires hard labor, and is done outside. The work requires the operation of multiple systems, equipment, and tools. The successful candidate will 1) operate the water plant, pumps, mains, and will complete monthly meter reads for approx. 450 utility customers; 2) operate sanitary sewer lagoons, lift stations, and mains; 3) plow/shovel snow and ice and otherwise clear debris from the public streets; 4) mow, weed-eat, and remove trash from the city parks, cemetery, and other green spaces.
