Special programming

June 25th  Animal Sounds and Stories by the Blank Park Zoo  10:30 a.m.

We all have a story to tell and so do the animals at the zoo! Our stories come alive with sound and movement as we discover the many ways animals communicate. Join a zoo educator and animals from the zoo’s Education Department during this fun and interactive program.

June 28th  The Words You Hear, The Songs You Sing: Lyrics as Literature (teens and adults)   7:00 p.m.

When we listen to music, there are usually two parts: the tune and the lyrics. The tune can elevate our hearts and souls, but so can the lyrics if we take the time to listen. Whether the songs are from Frank Sinatra or Sammy Hagar, the words we hear can tell a story that can be just as meaningful as the songs we sing.

July 11th  “Nature Rocks!  Kid’s Concert”   10:30 a.m.

Dallas County naturalist, Mike Havlik, is hosting a kid’s concert.  Weather permitting, we will be outside and encourage people to bring lunches to enjoy after the program. He plays guitar and his songs are participatory and fun!

July 25th  Des Moines Symphony Petting Zoo   10:30 a.m.

During the Petting Zoo, children will explore the following: listening to the difference between stringed instruments, exploring the different parts of the violin and cello, learning about the instrument’s sounds and dynamics.  Their hands-on experience will include: introductory time on the violin and cello, bowing all four strings, and holding the violin and cello on their own.
