Kyle Michel, City Administrator


Kyle comes to Van Meter from the City of Elkhart, Iowa, where he served as the City Clerk since 2016. Kyle is a graduate of Drake University where he received his Master’s in Public Administration. He currently serves as a Medical Services Officer in the Army Reserves and has served in the military for over 8 years between the Army, Iowa Army National Guard, and Army Reserves. Kyle currently resides in West Des Moines and will be moving to Van Meter with his girlfriend Anna and their two dogs, Teddy and Charlie. During his time in Elkhart he assisted the City in receiving over $400,000 in grant funding while addressing water quality and parks and recreation projects. Kyle also assisted the City in receiving the 2018 Program of the Year Award from the Iowa City and County Managers Association for the work the City conducted on a Source Water Protection Plan. He hopes to continue this success in Van Meter while assisting the City in their endeavors. Outside of work, Kyle enjoys hunting, fishing and fitness and he is also an avid cook. As a veteran, Kyle is also a staunch advocate for veterans, especially those close to home in Iowa where he volunteers with numerous veteran nonprofits. During graduate school, Kyle served as an intern for the City of Van Meter and is excited to come back to the community and continue working within the profession of municipal management.

Liz Thompson, City Clerk


Liz Thompson was appointed as Deputy City Clerk in September 2004; and in 2013 after 9 years of outstanding service and in recognition of her talents, work ethic and her value as a tremendous asset to the city she was promoted to City Clerk. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa (GO PANTHERS)! She earned a certificate from the Dale Carnegie Management Training Program and has competed several Insurance Institute of America courses. In 2009, she successfully completed training sessions to become a certified municipal clerk through the Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute at Iowa State University. She was presented the Iowa Certified Public Manger certification by the State of Iowa and Center for Professional Studies of Drake University in recognition of completing the CPM program in 2016.

She served on various committees and boards during the 20 plus years she has resided in Van Meter. Most notable is the 8-year term she served on the Van Meter Community School Board. She has a passion for serving the community in which she lives and works.

Liz has three children; Ben, Sam and Lilly. In her spare time, you will find her in the great outdoors gardening, walking, motorcycling or reading and of course, watching her kids in their pursuit of excellence.

City Hall is located at 310 Mill Street.  Office hours are typically 9:00-5:00.  Phone: (515) 996-2644.  City Hall houses the office of the City Administrator and City Clerk.
